Frequently Asked Questions

The questions that come up most often, answered honestly.

Do I need to be good at art?

No — and it genuinely does not matter. The work is not about producing something accomplished or beautiful. Art materials are used as a way of noticing and expressing what is hard to say, and plenty of clients never use them at all.

What happens in a first session?

Mostly conversation. We talk about what brought you in, what you would like to be different, and any history that feels relevant. You will not be asked to make art in the first session unless you want to. By the end we will have a sense of whether this is a good fit, and there is no obligation to continue.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed is confidential and records are kept securely, as required by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. There are narrow legal exceptions — risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, suspected harm to a child, or a court order — and these will be explained clearly at the outset.

Are sessions in person or online?

Sessions are held virtually and are available to anyone located in Ontario. Virtual art therapy works well; you will be told in advance of any materials worth having to hand.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you are working through and what you want from it. Some people come for a focused handful of sessions around a specific issue; others stay longer. We will review it together rather than committing to a fixed number up front.

Will my insurance cover this?

Most extended health plans in Ontario cover a Registered Psychotherapist, but not all do — some list only psychologists or social workers. Ask your provider whether Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is covered and what your annual maximum is. Receipts include everything insurers require. See Fees & Insurance.

Can faith be part of the work?

If it is meaningful to you, yes. Islamic teachings and spiritual reflection can be thoughtfully integrated into sessions. If that is not what you are looking for, it will not form part of the work — this is entirely your choice and can change at any point.

Do you work with children?

Sessions are offered to youth as well as adults. If you are enquiring on behalf of a young person, send a note with a little context and you will get an honest answer about whether this is the right fit.

What if I am in crisis right now?

This practice is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. For urgent mental health support in Ontario, ConnexOntario is available 24/7 at 1-866-531-2600, and the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline can be reached by call or text at 988 at any time.

Still have a question?

Anything not covered here is worth asking. Questions are welcome and carry no obligation to book.
